Clean Energy Drives Economic Development
Green Banks help make it happen
About the GB50
A groundbreaking new organization bringing together green banks across the nation to lead a historic wave of clean energy and climate investment in American communities. The organization includes green banks in nearly all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.
Why was it founded?
GB 50 was established in response to critical market gaps in financing clean energy and climate solutions. With $20 billion in federal GGRF stalled and traditional lenders often lacking the expertise or willingness to back emerging clean technologies, many communities, especially those most in need, were left without access to transformative projects. GB 50 unites state and local green banks into a member-led hub that champions innovative financing models, preserves years of community-driven pipelines at risk, and accelerates investment in inclusive, climate-forward infrastructure nationwide.
Who it serves
GB 50’s network serves a diverse array of stakeholders committed to equitable clean energy deployment. Our members work together to drive projects in low-income and disadvantaged communities disproportionately affected by pollution and environmental injustice. By fostering peer learning and collective fundraising, GB 50 empowers state and local climate finance leaders to provide accessible, affordable financing for affordable housing retrofits, community solar, EV infrastructure, and more.
Shared services & support
GB 50 offers comprehensive shared services and support tailored to the needs of emerging and established green banks. Our suite of common resources includes underwriting tools, legal defense and compliance templates, and centralized backend systems, ensuring consistent standards. Complemented by training programs, best practices, and technical expertise, these services enable members to scale local project pipelines efficiently while maintaining rigorous governance and accelerating capital markets coordination.
Our Mission
GB50 serves as a hub for green banks, fostering the shared development of best practices, resources, and financial solutions for the rapidly growing green banking industry. GB50 aims to accelerate the expansion of green banking and drive investment in clean energy and inclusive climate solutions in communities across the country, particularly in lower-income areas that have been disproportionately impacted by pollution and environmental injustice.
Green banks exist to meet funding and technical assistance needs for clean energy and climate projects.
Green bank investments bring private capital off the sidelines, build and transform clean energy markets, and result in a faster, more equitable transition to clean energy.
In 2023 alone, green banks invested over $10 billion into communities across the country.
Why the GB50 Matters
Green banks are set to play a crucial role in creating jobs, boosting local economies, addressing climate change, and making clean energy accessible to all Americans.
Our coalition is positioned to support the growth of green banking into new communities, ensuring that benefits reach more homes, community organizations and small businesses.
GB50 provides peer learning opportunities to share tools, resources, and best practices for green banks to extend capital, engage communities, and maximize the impact of federal clean energy incentive programs.
